New duty, new complexity

With the implementation of EU Directive 2023/2673, online retailers in Germany and across the EU are faced with a specific new obligation: From June 19, 2026, consumers must be able to cancel contracts just as easily as they have concluded them. The core of this regulation is the introduction of a so-called withdrawal button — a permanently visible, clearly marked function that customers can use to declare their withdrawal with just a few clicks.

For many e-commerce companies, this means not only a legal adjustment of their shop interfaces, but also profound changes in operational processes. This is because simplifying the withdrawal process also increases the need to process incoming inquiries efficiently, in a structured and legally compliant manner.

What sounds simple has far-reaching consequences for your processes:

  • More withdrawals due to lower hurdles
  • New touchpoints in the customer journey
  • Increasing requirements for allocation and processing
  • More pressure on returns and support teams

A button alone doesn't solve a problem — it moves it to your operations.

With toern, the withdrawal button becomes part of your system — not your problem

From May 2026, toern will provide its customers with a withdrawal button that can be integrated directly into the existing Shopify infrastructure. You can generate an individual link from our system that leads to a structured withdrawal form. Incoming inquiries are automatically recorded and can be further processed in the central dashboard.

We don't think of revocation in isolation, but as part of your overall returns and retention strategy.

This is how the withdrawal button works with toern

  1. Generate link - You create your individual withdrawal link in the TOERN portal.
  2. Integrate into the shop - You store the link behind your cancellation button.
  3. Record revocation - Customers enter their data in a clear, legally secure form.
  4. Automatically process- All inquiries end up in your dashboard in a structured way — ready for automated workflows.

Every withdrawal is different — our system knows that

Depending on the time of withdrawal, various processes can be initiated — from cancellation before shipping to coordinated return processes to handling complaints. The aim is to integrate the new legal requirements into your existing processes with as little manual effort as possible.

toern recognizes the context of the revocation and automatically controls the correct processes:

  • Before shipment: Order is canceled immediately
  • During shipping: Returns are being prepared + clear customer communication
  • After receipt: Standard return process starts
  • After the deadline: Transition to complaint process

“The introduction of the withdrawal button is a good example of how regulatory requirements can increase operational complexity,” says Alena Schneck, founder of toern. “It is now crucial not to think of these new touchpoints in isolation, but rather to embed them sensibly into existing systems and processes. ”

Turning compliance into competitive advantage

With the simplification of withdrawal, it is expected that customer behavior will continue to change — particularly with regard to the use of return and withdrawal rights. For you, this brings the question of how these processes can be designed not only efficiently but also in a customer-oriented way.

Most retailers will see the withdrawal button as mandatory. You can use it for yourself.

With toern you:

  • reduce operational expenses
  • avoid errors and manual processes
  • keep track of things at all times
  • improve the customer experience
  • strengthen your retention in the long term

“Withdrawals are no longer a side issue, but an integral part of the customer journey. Companies that offer clear, transparent and well-managed processes here can not only control costs, but also strengthen trust and long-term customer relationships.” - Alena Schneck

Hi, we’re Alena and Jonas – the founders of toern. Anyone working in e-commerce knows the challenge: returns. They’re time-consuming, costly, and it’s often unclear why they happen in the first place. That’s exactly where we wanted to make a difference – with a solution that no longer treats returns as just a cost, but gives brands back control.
